WordPress.com Popular Posts

IMPORTANT: due to my job, I’m now too busy to maintain my plugins.

This plugin has been abandoned!

If you are a developer and would like to fork, feel free to do so (under the GPLv3 license). No need to contact me.

WordPress.com Popular Posts integrates with WordPress.com Stats plugin, providing a widget to show the most viewed posts.

Installation

  • From v2.0.0, WordPress 2.8 is required. If you are using an older version of WordPress, use v1.3.5 of this plugin.
  • Install WordPress.com Stats plugin (required at least v1.2!!!)
  • Download WordPress.com Popular Posts
  • Extract the files in the .zip archive, and upload them (including subfolders) to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  • Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  • Place the widget where you like in your sidebars
  • Enjoy!

Themes Integration

If your theme supports widgets, you can place the widget named ‘Popular Posts’ where you want.

If it doesn’t, put this code inside the file sidebar.php, in your theme files:

<?php if (function_exists('WPPP_show_popular_posts')) WPPP_show_popular_posts(); ?>

Optionally you can add some parameters to the function, in this format:

name=value&name=value etc.

Possible names are:

  • title (title of the widget, you can add tags (e.g. <h3>Popular Posts</h3>) default: Popular Posts)
  • number (number of links shown, default: 5)
  • days (length of the time frame of the stats, default 0, i.e. infinite)
  • show (what you want to show; it can be: both, posts, pages; default is both)
  • format(the format of the links shown, default:
    <a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title%'>%post_title%</a>

    )

  • excerpt_length (the length of the excerpt, if %post_excerpt% is used in the format)
  • title_length (the length of the title links, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
  • exclude (the list of post/page IDs to exclude, separated by commas. Read the FAQ for instructions)
  • cutoff (don’t show posts/pages with a view count under this number, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
  • list_tag (can be: ul, ol, none, default ul)
  • category (the ID of the category, see the FAQ for info. Default 0, i.e. all categories)
  • cachename (it is used to enable the cache. Please read the FAQ).

You can use these special markers in the format value:

  • %post_permalink% the link to the post
  • %post_title% the title the post
  • %post_title_attribute%the title of the post; use this in attributes, e.g.
    <a title='%post_title_attribute%'...
  • %post_views% number of views
  • %post_excerpt% the first n characters of the content. Set n in the widget options.
  • %post_category% the category of the post
Example

If you want to show the widget without any title, the 3 most viewed articles, in the last week, and in this format: My Article (123 views) you will use this:

<?php WPPP_show_popular_posts( "title=&number=3&days=7&format=<a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title_attribute%'>%post_title% (%post_views% views)</a>" );?>
Shortcodes

If you want to include the list in a particular page or post, you can use shortcodes. Please read the FAQ for further info.

Another update for everyone: while we wait for a real fix, you can raise the “magic number”, from 1 to something like 2 (this was enough for my blog). This will try to fetch more data from WP.com servers, and will increase the probability to avoid broken data.

Thanks — the magic number fix seems to be working on my blog. Now I need to figure out what’s going on with my other sites! It looks like WP is having some issues on their end as well.

hello
i have cleared it.. and nothing again
my site, joinog.com
and noa.al

at one of them i have wp 3.04, at the other the last version of wp.

whats wrong ?

Hi, can you try to install Jetpack? Installing it, setting a magic number greater than 1 (for example 2) in my plugin’s settings, clearing super cache if you (use it) has worked for me and SolidlyStated.

hello

i cant make tests, cus we are an important news agency, please can you confirm that this can resolve the issiue ?
smth else , what is the coment plugin you are using ? its rly nice.
Thank you

Like others here, I’m having trouble with your “WordPress.com Popular Posts” widget. The posts shown are not the most popular posts. I understand that this seems to be a WordPress problem.

An interesting thing, though: the SAME (erroneous) “top posts” show up at the bottom of my site’s dashboard page under “Site Stats.”

But if I click over to the full Sites Stats page (under JetPack), the stats history is CORRECT (accurately showing which posts have gotten the most hits in “all time”).

I don’t know why, but WP.com evidently separates the output got via API and via report page. It has shown different data even in the past (and it took a lot before I noticed this, pulling my hair out).

My stats now are working (I think they are gradually fixing everyone’s account). I’ve disabled WP Stats and installed Jetpack, and set my magic number to 2.
And I’m running WP 3.1.

Hi there,

Firstly, thanks for this lovely plugin, I have been using for a long time without any problem 🙂

However, recently there seem to have some minor issues. All this while, I insert your plugin code to an organic tabbed widget I created with this tutorial
http://thesis-blogs.com/tabbed-widget-tutorial-for-thesis-wordpress-theme-using-chris-coyiers-organic-tabs/

Never have any issue till recently the popular posts are showing. Other tabs on this tabs widget are working as usual, so I am guessing is the plugin somehow is no longer compatible, or maybe is due to its recent update.

I used to insert to the tabbed widget, it worked for a while. When it started not working anymore, I followed your above instruction inserting the following codes : –

<?php WPPP_show_popular_posts( "title=&number=3&days=7&format=%post_title% (%post_views% views)” );?>

However, without any success.

Could you please give me some advices or pointers on how to solve this?

Much appreciated for your time and help. Thanks a million in advance 🙂

cheers
Shirls

I am unable to get your plugin to work on my site. I running the most current version of WordPress as well as wordpress.com stats. I recently deactivated all plugins to debug and still it did not work. Any advice? Do you happen to know if there are specific plugins which wordpress.com Popular Posts will not work with?

Hi!
I’ve been using your awesome plugin for sometime now without any problem. Yesterday, I’ve upgraded it to Version 2.5.0 and discovered that it’s no longer displaying the popular posts at the sidebar. My site is widget-enabled and I’m using WordPress 3.0.4 and WordPress.com Stats which is actively running.
Please help me to resolve this issue. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you very much.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE:
I got an answer from the developers at wordpress.com:

Any glitches are a result of what we’re doing on our end and we are working to resolve them.

I am now in contact with them, and I’ll try to give them all the feedback they need to fix this issue.

I had the plug-in working fine for months – possibly years – but in the last few weeks the output is blank.

I’m guessing this is the same problem others are seeing – playing around with the magic number doesn’t appear to make any difference.

Hi Polpoino,

I just downloaded the plugin but I see that it doesn’t contain any of the tabs so I’m now looking for a tabbed widget. Could you please tell me the name of the WP tabbed widget(s) you used to create the sidebar tabs (tags, archives, popular posts) and the bottom tabs (related articles, comments, trackbacks)?

Thanks a lot :-* ,

Hi! Is there a way to use your plugin without using widgets? All I need is to obtain an array of popular posts from the plugin, without any tags or formatting, just a simple data array. I already have functions that generate a custom HTML output from an array of posts. Do you have any suggestions how to do this? Thanks!
