WordPress.com Popular Posts integrates with WordPress.com Stats plugin, providing a widget to show the most viewed posts.
Installation
- From v2.0.0, WordPress 2.8 is required. If you are using an older version of WordPress, use v1.3.5 of this plugin.
- Install WordPress.com Stats plugin (required at least v1.2!!!)
- Download WordPress.com Popular Posts
- Extract the files in the .zip archive, and upload them (including subfolders) to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
- Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
- Place the widget where you like in your sidebars
- Enjoy!
Themes Integration
If your theme supports widgets, you can place the widget named ‘Popular Posts’ where you want.
If it doesn’t, put this code inside the file sidebar.php, in your theme files:
<?php if (function_exists('WPPP_show_popular_posts')) WPPP_show_popular_posts(); ?>
Optionally you can add some parameters to the function, in this format:
name=value&name=value etc.
Possible names are:
- title (title of the widget, you can add tags (e.g. <h3>Popular Posts</h3>) default: Popular Posts)
- number (number of links shown, default: 5)
- days (length of the time frame of the stats, default 0, i.e. infinite)
- show (what you want to show; it can be: both, posts, pages; default is both)
- format(the format of the links shown, default:
<a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title%'>%post_title%</a>
)
- excerpt_length (the length of the excerpt, if %post_excerpt% is used in the format)
- title_length (the length of the title links, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
- exclude (the list of post/page IDs to exclude, separated by commas. Read the FAQ for instructions)
- cutoff (don’t show posts/pages with a view count under this number, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
- list_tag (can be: ul, ol, none, default ul)
- category (the ID of the category, see the FAQ for info. Default 0, i.e. all categories)
- cachename (it is used to enable the cache. Please read the FAQ).
You can use these special markers in the format value:
- %post_permalink% the link to the post
- %post_title% the title the post
- %post_title_attribute%the title of the post; use this in attributes, e.g.
<a title='%post_title_attribute%'...
- %post_views% number of views
- %post_excerpt% the first n characters of the content. Set n in the widget options.
- %post_category% the category of the post
Example
If you want to show the widget without any title, the 3 most viewed articles, in the last week, and in this format: My Article (123 views) you will use this:
<?php WPPP_show_popular_posts( "title=&number=3&days=7&format=<a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title_attribute%'>%post_title% (%post_views% views)</a>" );?>
Shortcodes
If you want to include the list in a particular page or post, you can use shortcodes. Please read the FAQ for further info.

Hmm the posts keep disappearing.
It will display the popular posts from time to time only.
What could be the problem?
Thanks for your help.

@sOliver:
Hi, can you try to follow the steps above?
I need more info. :-(|)
Hi, I like your plug-in a lot. But I have two questions. 1)Is it possible to display the number of visits on the bottom of every post? 2) Is it possible to display the most popular post on a page or post? So instead of showing it on the sidebar, I would be showing the popular posts on a page or post of my blog. Is that possible?
Hi, I am currently using your plugin and its great but I am wondering if its possible to display the number of visits on all posts within a blog instead of just displaying it on the sidebar. So whenever a visitor visits a post within the blog they could see the number of times the post had been visited. Is that possible?
Thank you very much! It works beautifully!!
@David: I put it on the wishlist, I’ll try to implement it as soon as I find the time for that 😛
@Ariel: Thank you! 🙂

For some reason the plugin doesn’t seem t respect my css. It is adding the following code into the generated html “<span style=”color: rgb(52, 52, 52)”
Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Thank you! Thank you!
I’ve gone through so many changes, I didn’t even remember setting that customization! Thanks for being so helpful and quick to answer. :o)
@Barbara: I’m glad it worked! 🙂
Happy blogging! 😛
@willibh: can you please comment in english? If I have understood, this plugin doesn’t work anymore since 2.6, right?
Try to follow these steps, and send to me the results of the debug version. Many users are using my plugin with v2.6 and above.
@Barbara: I’ve visited your site, and I’ve seen the wrong style:
You should check the “format” setting, in the widget configuration, its default value is:
Try to reset it to that value, and if nothing changes, try to disable your other plugins one by one, because my plugin shouldn’t output that code… :-/
Hi there! I love your plugin, I use it on my blog, problem is (and It’s not with the plugin but with wordpress.com stats) that stats are not displaying right.
For some reason, after one of these days the stats go all to 1 post, and the other day to another post, i.e, the Referrals doesn’t correspond at all to the Clicks on the articles… 🙁
Anyone with this problem?
Hi,
I am running your plugin and have been for some time on other blogs. However, currently I am having a problem showing more than 1 post. When I upgraded wordpress to 2.6 only 1 post was visible. I am also running version 1.3.4 which says fixed the problem?
Here is my call:
<?php WPPP_show_popular_posts( “title=&number=6&show=posts&days=365&format=%post_title%” );?>
any help would be great, click my name to see what I am talking about…
