WordPress.com Popular Posts

IMPORTANT: due to my job, I’m now too busy to maintain my plugins.

This plugin has been abandoned!

If you are a developer and would like to fork, feel free to do so (under the GPLv3 license). No need to contact me.

WordPress.com Popular Posts integrates with WordPress.com Stats plugin, providing a widget to show the most viewed posts.

Installation

  • From v2.0.0, WordPress 2.8 is required. If you are using an older version of WordPress, use v1.3.5 of this plugin.
  • Install WordPress.com Stats plugin (required at least v1.2!!!)
  • Download WordPress.com Popular Posts
  • Extract the files in the .zip archive, and upload them (including subfolders) to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  • Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  • Place the widget where you like in your sidebars
  • Enjoy!

Themes Integration

If your theme supports widgets, you can place the widget named ‘Popular Posts’ where you want.

If it doesn’t, put this code inside the file sidebar.php, in your theme files:

<?php if (function_exists('WPPP_show_popular_posts')) WPPP_show_popular_posts(); ?>

Optionally you can add some parameters to the function, in this format:

name=value&name=value etc.

Possible names are:

  • title (title of the widget, you can add tags (e.g. <h3>Popular Posts</h3>) default: Popular Posts)
  • number (number of links shown, default: 5)
  • days (length of the time frame of the stats, default 0, i.e. infinite)
  • show (what you want to show; it can be: both, posts, pages; default is both)
  • format(the format of the links shown, default:
    <a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title%'>%post_title%</a>

    )

  • excerpt_length (the length of the excerpt, if %post_excerpt% is used in the format)
  • title_length (the length of the title links, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
  • exclude (the list of post/page IDs to exclude, separated by commas. Read the FAQ for instructions)
  • cutoff (don’t show posts/pages with a view count under this number, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
  • list_tag (can be: ul, ol, none, default ul)
  • category (the ID of the category, see the FAQ for info. Default 0, i.e. all categories)
  • cachename (it is used to enable the cache. Please read the FAQ).

You can use these special markers in the format value:

  • %post_permalink% the link to the post
  • %post_title% the title the post
  • %post_title_attribute%the title of the post; use this in attributes, e.g.
    <a title='%post_title_attribute%'...
  • %post_views% number of views
  • %post_excerpt% the first n characters of the content. Set n in the widget options.
  • %post_category% the category of the post
Example

If you want to show the widget without any title, the 3 most viewed articles, in the last week, and in this format: My Article (123 views) you will use this:

<?php WPPP_show_popular_posts( "title=&number=3&days=7&format=<a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title_attribute%'>%post_title% (%post_views% views)</a>" );?>
Shortcodes

If you want to include the list in a particular page or post, you can use shortcodes. Please read the FAQ for further info.

All seems to be back to normal. WordPress.com appear to have sorted out the issue with “csv.php” within 24 hours. Thanks WP!

The other issues I see people list above don;t appear to have much to do with WPPP itself.

Fraten… whilst I’m here and have your full attention – thanks for a great contribution to the WP community. A truly great piece of work!!

NB: I can live without my wife… but there is no way I could live without WP plugin developers!!

@Estella: hi! You can add the option show=posts to the function. For example:
[/pre]

@Amit Banerjee: It should be fixed now. Let me know if it doesn’t still work for you.

@Robert@PNG: thank you for you really kind words! O-)

Thanks for the great plugin! Mine stopped working a few weeks ago. The posts that show up as most popular are in fact no longer my most popular. That is, there’s the posts listed by Popular Posts do not match my current WordPress.com statistics. I’ve emailed you a debug report. Thanks!

@Nuno Coimbra: Are you using WP-Cache or similar? These plugins take a snapshot of your pages and store it, so it could be not updated.

We upgraded our template and now when Google indexes our site, our posts show up with the title Popular Posts. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks

@Shan: I inspected your site and I discovered one thing: in the source code of your site, the words “Popular Posts” never appear.
So I think that it’s Google’s fault: maybe they implemented some kind of OCR bot that reads your image reading “Popular Posts” and thinks that it is the title of your page.
It’s just a supposition, it seems strange to me too…
Or maybe a wrong setting in All-in-one-SEO-pack?
I think that your issue isn’t related to my plugin, I’m sorry.

My popular posts stopped working this morning. I have not made any updates or changes. I have the latest version installed. Do you have any thoughts on what could be wrong?

Thank you,

Hi Frasten,

I was wondering if there’s any way to exclude a post from displaying? I even tried making the post a private post, but the link will still appear as a Popular Post. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks so much, and thanks again for this plugin!!

-Estella

oh, one more thing. how do you show a single day of stats? I set the days=1 and it showed nothing, but when i changed it to any other number (i.e. 2,5,0, etc) it worked.

Hi Frasten,

First of all thanks for creating this plugin. It has been part of my website layout for months now and is exactly what I need to display popular posts! So thank you very much for developing and constantly revising your popular post plugin

Since I updated to WordPress 2.8, I’ve noticed that the popular posts plugin starts acting weirdly. A couple of times in recent days I’ve noticed that the popular posts codes simply sends out:

It produces loads more of the (0 Views) but I can’t post the exact amount as it would make this comment huge. This happens for about 1-2 mins before everything returns to normal and the usual posts are displayed again.

Now I know that it says on the WordPress Plugins Directory that the popular posts plugin is compatible up to 2.7 so I was just wondering if it’s a issue with Popular posts plugin and 2.8 or a general error.

Thanks,

James
