WordPress.com Popular Posts

IMPORTANT: due to my job, I’m now too busy to maintain my plugins.

This plugin has been abandoned!

If you are a developer and would like to fork, feel free to do so (under the GPLv3 license). No need to contact me.

WordPress.com Popular Posts integrates with WordPress.com Stats plugin, providing a widget to show the most viewed posts.

Installation

  • From v2.0.0, WordPress 2.8 is required. If you are using an older version of WordPress, use v1.3.5 of this plugin.
  • Install WordPress.com Stats plugin (required at least v1.2!!!)
  • Download WordPress.com Popular Posts
  • Extract the files in the .zip archive, and upload them (including subfolders) to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  • Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  • Place the widget where you like in your sidebars
  • Enjoy!

Themes Integration

If your theme supports widgets, you can place the widget named ‘Popular Posts’ where you want.

If it doesn’t, put this code inside the file sidebar.php, in your theme files:

<?php if (function_exists('WPPP_show_popular_posts')) WPPP_show_popular_posts(); ?>

Optionally you can add some parameters to the function, in this format:

name=value&name=value etc.

Possible names are:

  • title (title of the widget, you can add tags (e.g. <h3>Popular Posts</h3>) default: Popular Posts)
  • number (number of links shown, default: 5)
  • days (length of the time frame of the stats, default 0, i.e. infinite)
  • show (what you want to show; it can be: both, posts, pages; default is both)
  • format(the format of the links shown, default:
    <a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title%'>%post_title%</a>

    )

  • excerpt_length (the length of the excerpt, if %post_excerpt% is used in the format)
  • title_length (the length of the title links, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
  • exclude (the list of post/page IDs to exclude, separated by commas. Read the FAQ for instructions)
  • cutoff (don’t show posts/pages with a view count under this number, default 0, i.e. unlimited)
  • list_tag (can be: ul, ol, none, default ul)
  • category (the ID of the category, see the FAQ for info. Default 0, i.e. all categories)
  • cachename (it is used to enable the cache. Please read the FAQ).

You can use these special markers in the format value:

  • %post_permalink% the link to the post
  • %post_title% the title the post
  • %post_title_attribute%the title of the post; use this in attributes, e.g.
    <a title='%post_title_attribute%'...
  • %post_views% number of views
  • %post_excerpt% the first n characters of the content. Set n in the widget options.
  • %post_category% the category of the post
Example

If you want to show the widget without any title, the 3 most viewed articles, in the last week, and in this format: My Article (123 views) you will use this:

<?php WPPP_show_popular_posts( "title=&number=3&days=7&format=<a href='%post_permalink%' title='%post_title_attribute%'>%post_title% (%post_views% views)</a>" );?>
Shortcodes

If you want to include the list in a particular page or post, you can use shortcodes. Please read the FAQ for further info.

I’ve looked in the comments for someone with simmilar problem, but found nothing. I’m trying to integrate the plugin with my theme, and in this specific case I can’t use the widget. I have a popular tab in the sidebar.

I wanted to use the WPPP_show_popular_posts function, but it’s missing some of the settings that are available through the widget. How do I set it to view only post/pages from a given category?

Thanks for a great plugin.

Hi.
I’m using this plugin in a widget on the sidebar, and it works fine. But everyday, at 9:00 pm, it fades out, show no register at all. At midnight it starts to work fine again.
My timezone is GMT-3, I guess the problem is related to this difference.
All my system, including wordpress.com stats, is adjusted to the mentioned timezone…
Any ideas ?

Thanks for your support, and congratulations for this excelent plugin.

@Maltaannon:
You could use the following code:

Where 123 is the ID of the category you need. You can get that ID going in your admin area, under Posts => Categories, then mouseover on your category, and read the ID in your browser’s statusbar:

http://DOMAIN/wp-admin/categories.php?action=edit&cat_ID=1

I forgot to add this in the documentation, sorry.

@Michael: I’m glad to hear that 🙂

@Flávio Lapa Claro: Too bad, the WordPress.com Stats API doesn’t allow to set a timezone for now, I’m sorry…

I did try that – but only with the “category” – not the “show” parameter. When the category had no posts I got the empty results (even without the pages), but when I used the correct category (that had posts in it) I also saw the pages, so I thought that maybe I did something wrong. What do you think? I’m going to try it with the “show” parameter of course.

One more question – how do I get a total number of visits for a given post? I’d like to add it to my single.php template. If it’s not possible yet it would be great to have that option on the next release.

Love the plugin btw – I was hoping that someone could develop a Popularity plugin based on WordPress Stats. 🙂

Thanks for yr answer. Nevertheless,I’ll keep the widget in the sidebar, despite the three hours in wich it does not show data…

Again, congratulatios, yr plugin is very good.

I’ve just installed this one my 2.8 installation of wordpress however only 1 link is showing up, when i’m asking the widget to display up to 5. Does it take a while to populate?

@Maltaannon: if you’re still having issues, could you please follow these instructions and mail me the debug log?
And about your feature request, I’ve added it to my to-do list.

@Flávio Lapa Claro, @katinka: thank you 🙂

@Jaina: WordPress.com Popular Posts makes the assumption that the most visited pages are posts, and not pages. But it is not your case, too bad.. 🙁
In the next version I’m planning to add an option that will fix your issues, but will also slow down the plugin… I could add a caching system to avoid stressing your site, but it could require much work/testing on it.

Great plugin, everything works well. Is there any way to display post views on a per-post basis i.e in header or footer of a single post? Or, is that something this plugin cannot do (i had a look, but could not find instructions for this).

Hey,
Thanks so much for all the work you’ve done on the plugin. For some reason mine install doesn’t seem to be updating inline with the wordpress stats plugin. It currently seems to be about two days behind. It’s only just started happening, and I’m not sure why – no other plugins have been added or taken away from the site! Any ideas?
thanks,
edd
